Amazing Anime You Can Binge In One Day (6)

Generally, most anime get 12 or 13 episodes, and that is it. Occasionally, a show might prove successful enough to warrant a sequel, and they tend to be either shonen, isekai, or (maybe) romance stories. Once every few years, an anime becomes a weekly fixture, releasing content for seemingly ever and producing hundreds of episodes. While usually great for binging, these shows are designed to be consumed over what feels like a lifetime. Sometimes, a short anime that can be completed in a day is just more enjoyable.

Technically, most one-cour anime can be watched over a long afternoon; however, they usually end on inconclusive notes, which does not make for a particularly great experience. Consequently, let's take a look at the best binge-worthy anime that are satisfying.

Updated November 9, 2024 by Mark Sammut: As not every short anime can be unabashedly praised, a section dedicated to divisive shows has been added. These series might not achieve "greatness" or warrant an "amazing" descriptor, but they have enough positive elements to be worth highlighting, if not necessarily recommending. If any of them sound interesting to someone, they should try to track them down.

Tonari no Seki-kun has a delightfully uncomplicated premise. A diligent student, Rumi Yokoi just wants to pay attention in class; unfortunately for her, she happens to sit next to Toshinari Seki, a boy who will go to great lengths to ensure that he never has to pay attention in class. A battle for the ages ensues as Seki devotes all his concentration to accomplishing his experimental acts of time-wasting while Rumi tries desperately to resist the urge to stare in bafflement at the chaos transpiring at her neighboring desk.

The main episodes last roughly 7 minutes, so the series goes by in a heartbeat. While each skit revolves around essentially the same joke, its short runtime and willingness to embrace absurdity permit Tonari no Seki-kun to feel fresh throughout its entire run.

Based on Takashi Okazaki's seinen manga, Afro Samurai gained a following due to its well-choreographed action and star-studded English voice cast. In an alternative interpretation of feudal Japan, warriors are classified by the number on their headbands, with "Number 1" representing the greatest fighter in the country. As a child, the eponymous samurai witnessed his father's death at the hands of Justice, a killing that saw the latter take the former's Number 1 headband. Now a capable swordsman, Afro Samurai seeks revenge on Justice.

Afro Samurai has fun characters and a great soundtrack, but the anime's main appeal is its gory fight sequences and stylish animation. Although the story has some depth and flashes of introspection, the series and movie both understand what the audience is here to see.

Ok, this is a special case since The Tatami Time Machine Blues is a sequel to 2010's fantastic The Tatami Galaxy, which can be also binge-watched as it is only 11 episodes. However, the 2022 season flies by in roughly two hours, and the story is pitch-perfect for a single session sit. Despite being a sequel, The Tatami Time Machine Blues largely does its own thing and can be watched without familiarity with its predecessor, even if that would not be ideal.

On a sizzling summer day at an apartment block filled with Kyoto University students, the air conditioner's remote breaks, dooming the residents to hell on Earth. However, somehow, they discover a time machine, granting them the opportunity to rewrite the past and cool the future. Naturally, things get complicated rather quickly. As the show was adapted into a 2010 movie, Time of Eve was almost omitted from this discussion; however, the 6-part ONA series is readily available on Crunchyroll, while the feature is not. If someone wants to experience this sci-fi story, their best bet is to watch the original show rather than the film, especially since they are generally of similar quality.

So, what is this anime about? Well, Time of Eve is all about AI, and it covers fairly well-worn ground in the general sci-fi genre. In an alternate reality where technology has advanced to the point of allowing androids to exist in most households, a clear divide exists between humans and their robotic servants. Generally, the latter are viewed as little more than household items, with the public being encouraged by a ruling body to treat androids as disposable rather than living beings capable of thought, discourse, or emotions. One day, Rikuo follows his family's AI robot to a cafeteria that eliminates the barrier separating humans and androids, requiring patrons to see everyone on equal footing rather than focusing on their makeup and flesh.

Although not necessarily covering new ground, Time of Eve presents an inspired take on this subject. The café serves as a safe zone for androids looking to be themselves and humans willing to expand their discriminatory view of the world. Rather than an overarching narrative, the anime mostly focuses on telling personal small-scale stories about how this society functions on a micro-level.

Unlike a lot of other series on this list, Devilman Crybaby is not a happy-go-lucky story or a comedic masterpiece. It has some funny moments, sure, but Devilman is nihilistic to its core, as author Go Nagai intended it. But, when Masaaki Yuasa was approached with the concept of creating his own spin-off Devilman story, things somehow managed to get even darker. It's honestly a psychological sort of experiment with gratuitous amounts of violence, gore, and other adult themes. Though, to be fair, it's not quite on the same level as some other, more nuanced, psychological anime.

Throughout his educational and endearing journey, Kintaro must constantly evolve and adapt to survive.

Carnival Phantasm is a special case since it is difficult to outright recommend in isolation. The comedy OVA series parodies a few Type-Moon properties like Fate/stay night and Tsukihime; consequently, familiarity with these universes' characters will determine someone's appreciation of this spin-off. Technically, Carnival Phantasm might get a laugh out of newcomers due to some decent slapstick and clever wordplay, but the show assumes that everyone watching is already a fan who has either consumed the original visual novels, manga, or anime adaptations.

At an initial glance, one might be tempted to dismiss Gunbuster as just another mecha anime about a timid pilot proving their doubters wrong as they defeat alien threats. In some ways, Gunbuster is that show, but it is also a lot more. Over the course of the original OVA series' six episodes, Gunbuster blends fantastically animated action sequences with a strong roster of characters who go through an impressive amount of development, particularly Noriko Takaya and Kazumi Amano. This anime also improves as it goes along, culminating in a satisfying conclusion.

The sequel, Diebuster, is a bit more convoluted and, consequently, polarizing, although it is still enjoyable and worth a try for fans of Gunbuster. However, the 2005 series only loosely connects to its predecessor, so Gunbuster can be binge-watched without worrying about the sequel.

One exception is ABJ Company's Mignon, an ONA series consisting of 12 short episodes.

Combining Boys Love, trauma, underground fights, and vampires, Mignon does an impeccable job of juggling its many, many ideas, especially considering it is only about an hour long in total. It would be easy to just say every short anime is worth a watch since they do not require considerable investment; in truth, that is not really the case. Ultimately, a show's length is irrelevant if the quality is not there. As previously highlighted, there are plenty of great short anime that can be watched in a single day without reservations. However, there are also quite a few series that are extremely divisive, to the point of being love or hate-type deals. They are still worth mentioning, even if some people might hate them. Let's go through a few below:

  • Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror – The inspiration for this section, Uzumak i seemed set to be comfortably among the best short anime ever after its first episode dropped. Unfortunately, the horror series lasted for three more chapters, none of which came close to replicating the magic of the opener (let alone Junji Ito's source material). Consequently, this show is in a strange spot where only a single episode can be recommended, and sticking around for more is not advised.
  • Alice in Borderland – Haro Aso's Alice in Borderland is brilliant, and it even spawned a pretty darn good live-action adaptation. Despite its relative popularity, the manga has only received a 3-episode OVA, which is nowhere near enough to do justice to this series. Still, the anime is fine enough as an introduction to this universe and the high-stakes game that drives its narrative forward.
  • Young GTO – Considering Great Teacher Onizuka is considered an all-time classic, it is surprising that Young GTO only received a 5-episode anime rather than a full adaptation. The series is also somewhat forgotten these days, a consequence of so many '90s OVAs fading into oblivion over the last two decades. While not a batch of GTA, Young GTO is a fine prequel, although the manga is considerably better.
