What chocolate bars are best for a small treat low in carbs etc ?

Whatever you fancy 🙂 I eat all the normal ones. Just choose your time wisely.

By “wisely” I mean after a meal, before exercise, when you need a ‘top up’, etc. If you’re looking for posh chocolate, I like a Hotel Chocolat.
If you’re looking for normal supermarket chocolate, then there are loads. I had a Dairy Milk chocolate mousse egg today - it was yummy! I ate it without a bolus because my blood sugar was ok and I was about to go out (and burn off some sugar).
(And no question is ever silly)

Ok cool, I'll probably just start small and have a freddo with 1 unit and see how I get on, thanks for your help.

Just checked the box (I was too eager to eat it to look before It was a Dairy Milk Egg N Spoon Chocolate egg from a box of 4, like an egg box.
If you want something small, Freddo Frog is good, as are Kit Kats, Dairy Milk child bars (small and thin), Chocolate buttons, etc Or you could get a box like a Heroes or Celebrations with the really teeny ones.
If you have more will-power than me, you can just get a large bar and break off a few pieces as you want them.
The only reason I limit my chocolate is for general health reasons. I find it has little effect on my blood sugar if I eat it at the appropriate time. I almost never bolus for it.

The only ones you need to watch are the extra-sweet chocolates eg those Dairy Milk ones with chunks of sweets or fudge in. For those, I’d probably eat them before a walk or shopping, etc, to counteract the sugar.
I was just sitting here thinking and I can’t remember the last time I bolused for chocolate. It’s a balance of timing, your current blood sugar, and what you’re about to do. And obviously not eating your own body weight in the stuff at one time!
There’s nothing ‘forbidden’ about chocolate. It’s actually not high GI (which is why we’re told not to use it to treat hypos). It’s the same as anything with Type 1 - we just need to think more.

I have just (and very cautiously!) started treating myself a couple of times a week. I discovered that a fun-size pack of maltesers takes me up to around 6.5, although that is after a walk as well. I don't think I'll ever be able to snack and not walk again! They are 99 calories per pack if you are also calorie counting.

Don't EVER use choc to treat a hypo though - a lot of fat in all milk choc, less in high cocoa content ones but just too flippin slow acting carb in general, to treat a hypo!
I like a bit of dark myself, should get some next week, cos if it's much later this month too close to Easter for my shopper to be rummaging about for types of choc she's personally unfamiliar with.

I know everyone is different and it depends on activity levels and such, but how many carbs would you think was a safe amount in chocolate in one sitting.

I'm partial to dark chocolate so I tend to go with Lidl's 95%, Lindt 90% etc but Aldi do 25g individually wrapped bars of chocolate for £1.49, there are 5 in a pack and come in a range of flavours, the 85% is nice and I find that sweet, it's less than 5g carbs per bar, I tried the other flavours which were nice too but can't remember carbs as it was before I was diabetic, they also do bars of mousse filled chocolate, the chilli and cherry is 15g carbs per bar and the orange 17.something per bar, Cadbury's dark milk in the 4 multipack is 14g carbs per bar xx

I'm literally happy with a small amount - but honestly I've never considered choc as unsafe!! In fact very few foods are unsafe. I may limit some but if it was well into double figures of carbs and I WANTED to eat it - I would and just bolus a greater amount of fast acting, cos it won't be there to eat tomorrow will it if I make a pig of myself today!! But it's been a long time since I've eaten a whole box of jaffa cakes and I only did that anyway cos I was fed up. And then sodding annoyed I'd done it, so wouldn't do it again for months.
Gimme a Terry's choc orange and I'd like 2 segments - and then hide them cos I won't want any more until Sat or Sun, if not Mom. Trouble is - Pete will have been and got it out the fridge and either encouraged me to eat some or eaten it himself cos you obviously didn't want to ..............

No chocolate or carbs are unsafe. I speak as a chocoholic here so I’ve eaten more than my fair share over the years! ‘Death by chocolate’ is a dessert not a warning to Type 1s
Carbs are fine. Chocolate carbs are just like other carbs - fine and not dangerous.
When I was first diagnosed, I honestly thought anything at all sweet was very bad for me because I had Type 1. Somehow in my head was the myth that I’d brought it on myself by ‘eating too much sugar’ or some such rubbish. I thought anything sweet was like poison, but that was completely untrue.
Carbs are not bad. You ate them before diagnosis and you can eat them now. The only difference is you have to be your own pancreas and think more when you eat.
Cereal, pasta, rice, bread, quinoa, fruit - and yes, chocolate - are all absolutely ok.
