In Conan Exiles, everything is out to kill you, even your own stomach if you're not too careful. Like in most other survival games, the fragility of dear life is instilled in you with every step you take. So what can you do to soften the blow of this bleak, draconian game world? You build a house. It doesn't matter if it's crude and mostly resembles your childhood attempt to shield yourself from imaginary monsters with a blanket; a base can keep you alive.

Sadly, that very same home can also serve as your coffin and gravestone if you're not careful in choosing where you squat. Other players, NPCs, or the forces of nature are none too welcoming to you and your humble abode; it's best to treat everything with hostility here. So when building a home in Conan Exiles, it pays to go about it with the meticulousness of a real estate agent, and these locations ought to satisfy.
10 One Of The Islands On The Far Eastern Side
- Hard to reach
- Easy to defend
- High elevation
- Near wood and water
If you want your kingdom to be quiet and to be generally out of reach of some punks who want what you have, then the easternmost island clusters on the map are the perfect sanctuary. These islands are off the coast after the jungle biome or region.
Since it's near the jungle, it's also abundant with resources, mainly wood and water. The downside is that constructing your base on top of the island mountains is a pain. That's still good since enemies will also have a similar problem accessing the spot.
9 The Crevice In D11
- Lots of metal
- Has a cave
- Highly contested area since it's pretty popular
- Located in the Tundra so water might be a problem
Metals, mostly iron and steel, make the world go round for conquerors in Conan Exiles. Plopping your base on top or near some of the best metal reserves in the game is thus a brilliant strategy as you'll progress your gear pretty quick.

The Crevice is perhaps the best location on the map that houses dense clusters of metals. It's a cave in the tundra biome or region and that already makes it an appealing spot for a base. Do be aware that you might have to fight for the spot due to its strategic importance.
8 At H6 On Any Platform Near The River Or In Claw Outcrop
- Area has easy access to water
- Thralls are available for the taking
- Lots of resources
- Near the center of the map
Looking for a safe location that's somewhat near the starting area in the game? Somewhere in H6 or in the middle of the canyon desert region of the map lies a pretty solid base location. A river runs along the site so looking for a flat or elevated area close to that body of water is optimal.
Claw Outcrop is likely the best spot for your base here. There's a fair number of NPCs around the area and some of them have skills that are useful for your base. On top of that, the location is near the center of the map, making everything fairly accessible.
7 Howling Plateau At E4 Or F4
- Near a source of water
- Lots of NPCs you can turn into thralls
- Lots of good resources
- Varied local wildlife
Want to get a bearer thrall or some sturdy fighter thralls fast? Then head on over to Howling Plateau between E4 and F4. It's the area near the land bridge, look for a clearing there the gives you a good view of the canyons.

Near that campsite is a Darfari camp that you can constantly raid if you want to get some thralls. The NPCs there also tend to respawn. A short venture out of the camp also gets you near some gold and silver reserves as well as an encounter with some animals that can give good crafting materials.
6 Near The Black Galleon In I7
- Near civilization
- Near a water source
- Near some thrall sources too
Anywhere in I7 or the surrounding tiles is good enough as it brings you close to the Black Galleon. It's a settlement built atop a cliff that's shaped like a ship. The settlement has a double-digit population with lots of thralls residing in it.
You can easily take some of those yourself though caution is advised as it's easy to attract the attention of other inhabitants. In any case, the area near the Black Galleon is full of potable water and the environment itself can sustain you and your budding empire.
5 F8, Near The Den
- Near the oasis
- Lots of thralls
- Lots of decent resources too
- Fairly hidden
For another location that's near the center of the map near the oasis and near The Den, specifically in F8 is a balanced spot. It's at the edge of the desert area and there's a wall that blocks you off from the oasis but the wall segment in F8 has a hole that gives you access northward to greener pastures.
Meanwhile, The Den itself is teeming with thralls you can acquire. The area is also near the center of the map so there's no difficulty traveling anywhere from here. You can use this base as a production site for your steel in-game stuff.
4 Swagger Rock In G7
- Wide-open area
- Close to water
- Good hunting spot
If you don't mind sharing your home with some lions (which you can turn into food anyway), then Swagger Rock is a lovely place. It offers a good near-360 degree view of the savannah biome or region and the spot can be easy enough to defend.
It's also a reference to the Pride Rock in The Lion King due to the shape and size of the rock formation. Plenty of animals roaming about combined with the water means your character will never go hungry here.
3 Gate Of The Moon In M5
- Metal is fairly accessible nearby
- Easy to defend
- Abundance of water and food
- Jungle ruins are far away from other players
Plenty of Conan Exiles players in PvP tend to scour the tundra, oasis, canyons, deserts, or the savannah area since those are the most accessible to the starting point. However, a hidden potential fortress exists in the jungle, namely the Gate of the Moon.

This ruined temple is a nice big spot that lets you build a base within the said ruins. That makes it a prime option for defending against sieges. The resources aren't too far away either and it being in the jungle means not many players will stumble upon it.
2 Near The Great Dam In G10
- Lots of water
- Highly defensible spot
- Popular location
Still, there's plenty of advantages to be had in choosing a spot in the most frequented paths of Conan Exiles. Lots of resources and thralls as well as a busy population are just some of those. You will want a base with a bottleneck entrance for defensibility though and a place near the Great Dam offers just that.
Eastward from the dam in G10, there's a large building where you can build your home. It has one entrance, making it deadly for invaders and of course, there's plenty of resources around since it's near the dam. You might have to compete hard for the place as it's popular.
1 Relicwatcher Rise In B7/8
- Access to thralls
- Access to metals
- Lots of good resources around the area as well
- Lots of food and water
- Good view of the surroundings
By far one of the best elevated locations for bases in the game, Relicwatcher Rise has everything you need. You'll be living in relative luxury if you decide to set up camp here and upgrade it to a fortress later on.
The area, which is the border between B7 and B8 has metal, food, wood, water, and lots of thralls. The place also offers a great view of the surroundings so you can see any young punks on your proverbial lawn and deal with them accordingly, mercilessly.
